The Importance of an Athlete Management System at all levels

I speak to so many competitors, coaches and parents about Tennis Training Programmes and almost every time the conversation will be around the subject of “something is missing”!! The player is not strong enough, fast enough cannot train at a high enough intensity and long enough durations or the player is having a problem mentally. Does this sound familiar? Unfortunately the solutions are very rarely easily found, I hope this blog is the beginning of the solution process and the answers to becoming an all-round tennis player.

The core of any of my personal achievements as a coach has been the implementation of the Athlete Management System. If you study the achievements in any sport, business or craft, it is nearly always underpinned by knowledge, skill, and knowing when, how and why it is delivered, this is what the Athlete Management System provides. Think about the people around you that you know who are very successful in their life; can you recognise these traits in them?

AMS Sport

When I launched AMS Sport, my coaching was very broad, across many sporting disciplines, football, boxing, cricket, golf and tennis, to mention but a few, but one aspect always stayed the same, knowledge and skill was key, and when, how and why you delivered it was all important! I applied the same AMS Sport principles and methods at all times, whether I was supporting a club or recreational athlete, or preparing competitors for the Commonwealth or Olympic games.

During this blog, I want to concentrate on a Tennis Training Programme that sits within the Athlete Management System programme and how to maximise its effect on tennis performance. During my time on the professional World Tennis Tour, what was obvious to me was that players who make tour level work extremely hard, but also extremely smart. To work smart you need the following, you’ve probably guessed! Knowledge, skill, and the ability to know when, how and why they are delivered. To obtain all this knowledge and skill and to then be able to use it in the right way is a big challenge for anyone who is a player or supporting a player.

How AMS Works

Players such as Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova do not use the Athlete Management System, but what they do use, is a programme structure very much like it. How do they obtain this knowledge? How do they know how and when to use it? Professionals surround themselves with professionals who have the skills, knowledge and the answers!! Whether your Tennis Training Programme is preparing you for a club match at the weekend, or a Grand Slam, to perform to your potential, you need the correct programme knowledge, advice and the strategy and plan to be able to use it.

What does a player need to achieve their potential? They must develop themselves physically, mentally and emotionally.

All this can be achieved with the Athlete Management System programme, and I have designed it so any player, coach, or parent at any level can use it with total confidence, to access the secrets of the professionals and their teams! Once you gain access to the full AMS Sport programme it will ask you to confirm what level of player you are, junior or senior, club or professional level.

The programme then offers you 7 levels, level 1 if you are a club or recreational player right the way through to level 7 if you are competing on the WTA or ATP tour. I wanted to design a Tennis Training Programme that could support parents, coaches and players at any level. And I wanted to ensure that the programme would grow with the developments that were being experienced, so if you are a club player “level 1” and you have just made regional standard, you simply move onto the next level. If you are a regional player and you have made national standard, the same applies, you just keep moving up the programme levels until you reach your potential. The Athlete Management System could take you all the way to professional tour level, if that is your aim, or simply make you a much better club player!

Knowledge is Key

I had the privilege of working around the best players in the world and delivering my skill as a coach against some of the world’s best players at the biggest arenas on the globe. But I noticed something very early on, I could meet a club player who was as passionate and driven as the professionals and wanted to do all they could to develop the areas that simply made a player get better. The problem for these players was the knowledge, how could they access it. How could they access programmes that made them physically stronger and more powerful, dramatically increase their speed around the court, develop reaction time and help them deal with the mental and emotional pressures that all players will experience? Tennis coaches, players and parents will often talk about development of technique, tactics and strategy, but one thing I know for sure as an elite coach, if the mind is not strong and resilient, everything else neck down can go very wrong. The Athlete Management System covers all of these areas and much, much more, I spent 8 years of my life designing the AMS Sport Athlete Management System, ensuring it is simple to use and has a dramatic effect on the player’s development. I am so pleased these years have been well spent; our list of subscribers and users across the world, from club to world class level have all benefited from the Athlete Management System, whether that’s improving their performance on a club level or going out on the global stage and winning world medals.

The challenge was always going to be to create a programme that could support “Any One at Any Level”; I’m pleased to say that at AMS Sport we have achieved this.
